Action Field Kodra 2014 – I Need a Hero

site-kodra

Action Field Kodra is an annual art event taking place each September in the east part of the city in a former military camp.

Action Field Kodra 2014 is focusing on the theme of heroes and the heroic example with a spirit of introspection towards historical narration, archaeological reserve and national imaginary.

Stated more as a question than a request or affirmation, I Need A Hero will attempt to conduct an experiment in real-life conditions. By inviting artists to submit complete sets of artistic expression through solo exhibitions and to produce new works in collaboration with the curatorial team of Kodra –and always continuing emphatically the institution of Fresh for young artists– Action Field Kodra is not claiming anything more than to leave a collective imprint, one more valuable matter among others.

GDG @ Thessaloniki International Fair

The most active month for our city has just begun with the 79th edition of the Thessaloniki International Fair taking place between September 6th-14th.

This is an annual event with great history.  Unfortunately today it is only a big fanfare.  The only interesting part that gives some hope for the future is the GDG event which is taking place during and inside the fair.

logo_horizontal-play1Google Developer Group (GDG) Thessaloniki aims at creating a vibrant and productive Google-focused community (The Playground).  The goal is to bring together passion 4 Innovation, to share latest developments, to ignite creativity and productivity so to create “The Playground”.

The event itself involves small and large gatherings with demos and tech talks, events like code sprints and hackathons, startup lectures and mentoring. In the last day of the event there is an interesting speech by Eli David on how to bootstrap your startup to success, which I will also attend.

Other than that I would not advice you to visit the fair unless you want to eat or drink local foods or go to live concerts of greek singers, among thousands of people.

Urban Picnic Festical 2014

Urban Picnic 2013It is time again for our beloved Urban Picnic. It is the last weekend of August, those who were out of the city are back, and all we want to do is enjoy the last summer nights outside. Urban Picnic is here for the 3rd year and here is last year’s post about it.

It runs for 3 nights starting today, The festival’s plan entails the creation of a great urban picnic which will be flanked, on the one hand, by concerts with  promising music ensembles from around the city and, on the other, by films, feature and short ones, shown at the specially designed open-air movie theatre.

Urban picnic 2013As you can see in the photo, my friends take the picnic idea seriously and we prepare a small feast. So, let’s start packing our picnic basket and go !  Thursday, Friday, Saturday – Don’t miss it !

Mojito Embassy @ Haven Bar

m2This is the event of the week ! Fortunately it lasts almost all week so you have still time to go !

From June 30 to July 3rd Thessaloniki, and most specifically Haven Bar is transformed to Havana, Cuba !

I was there last night and I must tell you one thing – if you are in town don’t miss it !!

The atmosphere and energy was amazing.  There was a big cuban street party with DYI mojitos sponsored by Havana Club, live music and dance !

m1The organisation of the event is simply amazing. At the entrance you receive your passport and then get inside where with you are given the ingredients to make your own mojito.  Bartenders at the special kiosks inform you about the history of cuban mojito and help you make it yourself. Of course making a mojito is really simple and easy, so once you make it you enjoy it for free with the sound of cuban music.

When I left I just wished there was a bar like this for the whole summer.

Today and tomorrow at Haven bar ! See you there !

7th World Naked Bike Ride

It is the first weekend of June, so it is time for the annual naked bike ride ! Currently on it’s 7th edition, this is an event that when it started only the “crazy” ones joined, and now it is a massive event that almost every young person in the city joins.

The World Naked Bike Ride is an international movement in which more than 70 cities worldwide take part.

It is the ultimate peaceful celebration for the promotion of bicycle as a means of transport, and sustainable mobility, against car culture and the pollution that it causes. For our independence from oil, lignite and non-renewable energy sources. For ecology, environment, human and non-human animals. For peace and non-violence, for the freedom of expression and stop feeling guilty for our naked body.

If the title scares you, don’t worry, you can come as naked as you want to. That means totally naked, or with a swimsuit, or even with a vest and shorts, whatever you feel comfortable in.  More than anything this event is about freedom and joy !

TedX Thessaloniki 2014

TedX is back for it’s 4th year in Thessaloniki. This year’s theme ?

Where does something end and where does it begin?

How can an end boost inspiration and how does a beginning make an end?

Where do we start from and how many are the ends and beginnings in a human’s lifetime?

tedx

This year TedX will explore the powerful circle between the end and the beginning and the moving force created when combined almost in every aspect of our life. A best selling author, an inspirational teacher and a historical figure from the design industry, among other speakers, will help us better understand what ends and beginnings mean to us. The guests will share ideas, personal stories and experiences to showcase the ever-evolving relationship between new starts and endings. We’ll have the chance to follow a young photographer’s strenuous efforts to understand the worlds of pornography and trafficking, and help young people make a new start in their lives, while a social entrepreneur will show how he decided to make a new beginning and flourish in a country miles away from his birthplace. Having experienced in our very own lives profound change through ends and beginnings over the recent years, this year TEDxThessaloniki felt the need to put together and showcase on stage people who have managed to master this powerful interconnection between several starting and ending points*.

FEAST Thessaloniki

Feast

FEAST is the new fund raising concept in town that intents to support local creativity.

It is not just support actually ! The concept is Eat, Drink and Vote !

If you are living abroad you might have heard of the concept already, but for us locals of Thessaloniki it is totally new, so let me explain.

What is FEAST?

… a live crowdfunding event
… a guerilla dinner in unexpected places
… an opportunity to support the creative class of Thessaloniki
… a solidarity act. After all you can’t make it all on your own!
… a place to bring together the creative community

In other words, people meet for a casual dinner, where they attend presentations of new business concepts for a small fee. At the end of the night the best concept, as voted by all participants, wins the amount of money collected.

Where ?

The first Thessaloniki FEAST will take place at ApoDec

When ?

Thursday 10th of April 2014 at 20.00

Check out the Facebook event page

Cost ?

10 euros including dinner and drinks !

Who ?

The people managing this new concept are Argiro Barata and Niki Vouimta two very friendly and energetic girls I had the pleasure to meet to help them choose the appropriate natural tableware for the event.

If you are in town don’t miss your chance to mingle, network and have fun!

Our city needs events that support local creativity and since we are also well known for partying and having fun, I surely hope to see you all there !

This International Marathon which symbolises one of the most recognizable personalities of humanity, Alexander the Great, is not just a major and International sporting event. It is a path in history, a path in ancient Greek culture, a Path full of Greece.

Besides the 43 km marathon which is for athletes and people who actually have a good fitness level, most people join the 5km and 10km which are very easy to follow at any pace.  Join the event this Sunday 6th of April !
