1. Thessaloniki Metro
The Metro is the newest and fastest way to move across the central urban spine of the city.
- Main Line: Connects the New Railway Station (N.S.S.) through the historic center (Egnatia Street) all the way to Nea Elvetia in the east, passing through key hubs like Venizelou, Agias Sofias, Syntrivani, and Panepistimio.
- Modern & Driverless: It is a fully automated, state-of-the-art subway system. Don’t miss taking a moment to admire the incredible archaeological exhibits integrated inside key stations (especially Venizelou and Agias Sofias), showcasing ancient Roman and Byzantine roads preserved in situ.
- Tickets: You can purchase single-use paper tickets or rechargeable transit cards at the automated vending machines inside every Metro station using cash or contactless cards.
2. City Buses (OASTH)
Buses remain an extensive way to reach neighborhoods outside the main Metro corridor, the Upper Town (Ano Poli), and suburban areas.
- Key Express Lines:
- 01X (or 01N at night): Connects Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) directly with the city center and the Intercity Bus Station (KTEL Makedonia).
- 50 (“Cultural Route”): A great budget-friendly sightseeing bus line that loops around the city’s top historic monuments and up to the Byzantine walls of Ano Poli.
- Bus Tickets & Payment:
- You can buy tickets from official kiosks, street newsstands (periptera), and ticket offices near main bus stops.
- Most modern buses feature contactless card readers, allowing you to pay directly with your bank card or smartphone upon boarding, removing the hassle of needing exact change in coins!
