If you ask any local about the Thessaloniki Metro, you’ll likely get a knowing smile, a sigh, or a long story. For us, this subway system became the city’s ultimate urban legend. The very first plans and the infamous “first hole” of the metro date all the way back to the late 1980s. For nearly four decades, especially my generation grew up waiting for a train that seemed like it would never arrive.
But as it turns out, there was a fascinating reason for the delay.
When workers finally started digging deep into the ground, they didn’t just find soil; they struck gold—archeological gold. Thessaloniki is a city built upon layers of history, and the excavation uncovered an entire ancient city hidden right beneath our modern streets. More than 300,000 artifacts were unearthed, revealing ancient Roman roads, Byzantine shopping districts, and centuries of daily life preserved in time.
Instead of hiding these treasures away in a distant museum, the city did something incredible: they integrated part of them into the metro stations, that was the main reason for the huge delay.
Stations like “Venizelou” and “Agia Sofia” are now breathtaking, open-air subterranean museums. As a visitor, you can take an escalator down to catch your train and find yourself walking alongside a brilliantly preserved 6th-century Byzantine Decumanus Maximus (the main avenue of the ancient city).
And finally today, I could not believe I took the metro to go to work. I thought this day would never arrive!

It took us almost 40 years of traffic jams, patience, and local jokes to finally see the metro line open. But standing under the city, watching modern trains glide past ancient Roman stones, you realize that the longest wait in Greek transport history gave birth to one of the most unique and beautiful subway experiences in the world.
Local Tip: Even if you don’t need to commute, go down the stairs just to explore Venizelou station. Walking through a subway entrance and suddenly looking down at an authentic ancient crossroad is a surreal experience that beautifully captures the timeless soul of Thessaloniki.
