Did you know that the wetlands surrounding Thessaloniki produce over 70% of Greece’s total rice harvest? This September, the city celebrates its rich agricultural heritage right along the waterfront at the 3rd Thessaloniki Rice Festival.
Taking place on September 19 & 20, 2026 (from 16:00 to 22:00) next to the iconic Statue of Alexander the Great, this open-air festival turns Nea Paralia into a giant culinary stage. Local chefs, cooperative producers, and top Thessaloniki restaurants gather to showcase the versatility of Greek rice through live cooking demonstrations, tasting menus, and traditional recipes with a modern twist.
From rich local risottos to traditional seafood pilafs, visitors can sample dishes prepared on the spot while learning about sustainable farming in the Axios Delta. Accompanied by local drinks, music, and sea breezes, it’s one of the most tasty outdoor events of early autumn.
Visitor Tip: Arrive around golden hour (around 18:30) to grab a tasting portion, enjoy the live cooking shows, and watch the sunset over the Thermaikos Gulf.
