Last week, all of Thessaloniki was buzzing about the Metro extension opening four new stops toward Kalamaria. Today, September 1st, the entire city has only one topic on its lips: the grand reopening of the historic Agora Modiano.
I took a quick walk through today, and I was genuinely mesmerized. Having followed the space journey, I knew the revamp would be high quality especially with the visionary Ergon Group taking over the operation and management. Still, stepping inside blew my expectations through the roof!
A Quick Step Back in Time
Designed by Eli Modiano in 1922 and completed in 1925, Agora Modiano was for nearly a century the vibrant commercial heart of Thessaloniki, echoing with the voices of local vendors, fresh fishmongers, spice sellers, and historic tavernas. The New Ergon Era
Walking in today, you are instantly transported into a space that seamlessly bridges the past and the future. The covered market features 32 curated shops thoughtfully organized into distinct thematic sections from traditional bakery, butcher, fishery and more smoothly blended with many cozy eateries, bar, and coffee spot.
The architectural redesign strikes a brilliant balance: preserving the nostalgic, vintage soul of the 1920s structure while infusing it with a sleek, modern twist. It feels fresh, vibrant, and as if it has always been there. It takes back and also forward in time!
This project is bound to be a massive success that both locals and international visitors will adore. Congratulations to everyone involved!
Visitor Tip & Hours: Agora Modiano is fully accessible (with entrances from Vasileos Irakleiou and Ermou streets). The retail food shops operate on extended commercial market hours, till 23:00, while the food and beverage venues stay open daily from until 01:00.
