The Unseen, Personal Photos of Frida Kahlo at the Port

After dancing through the 3D world of Frida, my November art crawl continues—but this time, we are shifting to a beautifully slow, deeply moving, and raw experience. For the first time in Greece, the legendary exhibition “Frida Kahlo – Her Photos” has docked at the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, located in the gorgeous Warehouse A at the port.

This exhibition is pure magic. When Frida passed away in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera locked away over six thousand of her personal photographs in a bathroom at their famous Blue House (Casa Azul) in Mexico City, ordering them to remain hidden for decades. Decades later, this treasure was finally uncovered, and 241 of these rare, unpublished photographs are right here in Thessaloniki.

Walking through the minimalist, seaside museum space today feels incredibly intimate. You are looking at the world through her eyes—black-and-white snapshots of her family, her turbulent love affair with Diego, her pain, her friends, and her beloved Mexico. It is an honest, vulnerable look behind the famous icon, revealing the real, fragile, yet unbreakable woman underneath. Combined with a slow walk by the sea at the port right after, it is the perfect definition of a mindful, soulful autumn afternoon in the city.

Local Tip: Because this exhibition is all about the fine, intimate details of photography, try to visit on a quiet weekday afternoon or a Thursday evening when the museum stays open later (until 20:00). It gives you the peace and space to truly connect with the stories behind each photograph without the weekend crowds.

“Frida Kahlo – Her Photos”, running from 3 October 2025 to 4 January 2026.

Where to find it: MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Warehouse A, Pier A, Port of Thessaloniki
