October is here and the long, relaxing days of a weird summer have officially come to an end. Returning to the city rhythms can always feel a bit bittersweet, but Thessaloniki has a wonderful way of offering comfort just when you need it. Today, searching for a smooth transition into autumn, my friend and I headed to one of the most intellectually charming and historic spots in town: Tabya.
Nestled right next to the grand Byzantine city walls on Konstantinou Melenikou Street, Tabya is set inside a breathtaking, masterfully restored neoclassical mansion dating back to 1910. It functions not just as a café-bar, but as a vibrant cultural hub that respects the architectural heritage of the city. Stepping into its peaceful, hidden courtyard feels like entering a secluded sanctuary where history and modern urban culture meet.
Sitting in the garden today, our table perfectly captures this transitional October mood. On one side sits my glass of fresh, ice-cold lemonade—my stubborn little way of holding onto the last sun-drenched memories of summer. On the other side, my friend has already embraced the autumn cozy vibes, cradling a warm, aromatic cup of hot tea.
Looking past our drinks, the view of the ancient brick-and-stone walls rising just behind the courtyard is completely mesmerizing. It is a place that invites you to slow down, have deep conversations, and realize that every season in this city has its own unique, beautiful magic.
Local Tip: Tabya’s interior is just as fascinating as its courtyard. Inside this 1910 mansion, you will find beautifully preserved rooms hosting art exhibitions, a record shop corner, and cozy study spaces. Make sure to take a quick walk through the rooms inside to admire the vintage ceilings and the historic architectural details!
Where to find it: Konstantinou Melenikou 14, Thessaloniki
