September in Thessaloniki has a beautiful, bittersweet quality. The heavy summer heat is gone, and the city returns to its lively, local rhythms. It is the perfect season for long, casual evenings spent outdoors around a table filled with small plates to share. On this beautiful September day, my culinary wanderings led me to one of the most atmospheric corners of the city: Agioi Apostoloi Square, and a wonderful gem called Mezen.
Tucked away near the historic Byzantine Church of Agioi Apostoloi and the old city walls, Mezen perfectly captures the traditional, unpretentious spirit of Thessaloniki’s food scene, but with a clever, modern twist.
While the ambiance is wonderfully relaxed and historical, the kitchen loves to surprise you. A perfect example—and the star of our table—was their famous take on the traditional Cretan dakos. Instead of the classic served-in-a-bowl style, they presented it beautifully reshaped to look exactly like a savory cheesecake! It tastes just as spectacular as it looks.
Sharing these creative meze plates with good company, under the shadow of ancient stones as the September twilight settles in, is what local living is all about. It’s an authentic, heartwarming experience where time slows down, and every bite tells a story of tradition meeting innovation.
Local Tip: The square here feels like a hidden village inside the bustling city. After enjoying your meal at Mezen, take a slow walk around the 14th-century church and the remnants of the old Ottoman baths nearby. It’s one of the most quietly romantic and historic walks Thessaloniki has to offer.
Where to find it: Agioi Apostoloi Square (Olympou Street), Thessaloniki
